Smartlipo FAQs

What is Smartlipo?
The SmartLipo is the first laser system designed for both body sculpting and the disruption of fat cells.  This procedure is ideal for treating localized deposits of unwanted fat, fat tissue irregularities and for coagulating tissue; all which lead to a tightening effect.  Smartlipo is ideal for treating small areas containing excess fat deposits such as the face, neck, arms, male breasts (Gynecomastia), and other areas of loose or lax skin.

How does Smartlipo work?
Smartlipo laserlipolysis is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that works to disrupt fat cells through a thermal and photodisruptive action which consists of heating and shattering the fat cell membrane. The laser coagulates the underlying vessels which results in less bleeding, bruising, trauma as well as less down time. In addition, the system has also been reported to promote tissue tightening through bulk thermal heating and tissue coagulation which gives patients tighter, smoother skin in the treated area.

The procedure is most commonly performed with a local anesthesia but if needed, patients can be given general anesthesia. An incision is made near the treatment area and a cannula is then inserted through a 1 to 2 mm incision in the skin and into fat pockets a laser fiber is introduced into the treatment area through a handpiece and the detachable cannula. The cannula, with the tip of the fiber exposed approximately 2 mm, is then moved in a ‘back and forth’ fanning motion underneath the skin. The laser’s aiming beam can be visualized through the skin, which allows the physician to reach and treat the entire treatment area. As the fiber tip comes in contact with the fat cells, the cell membranes rupture and release the fatty oil from the fat cells. This end product is then aspirated from the site.

What type of laser system is used?
The Smartlipo technology utilizes an Nd: YAG laser with high peak power and a high repetition rate of 40 Hz. During treatment, the laser energy is delivered using a 300 micron fiber which is introduced through the handpiece and cannula.

Is Smartlipo cleared by the FDA?
The Smartlipo has been FDA approved for laser-assisted lipolysis. It is also approved for incision, ablation, vaporization and coagulation of soft tissue.

Who is a good candidate for Smartlipo?
Ideal candidates for this procedure are in good health, close to normal body weight and have realistic expectations for their results. If the person has localized areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise, then that person is a candidate for Smartlipo.

How many treatments do patients require?
The majority of Smartlipo patients will only require one treatment.  The procedure will last from about 45 minutes to one hour for each area treated. Additional treatments may be warranted if patients are interested in ‘touch ups’ and revisions.

What are some benefits of the Smartlipo procedure?

  • Successfully treats localized deposits of unwanted fat and fat tissue irregularities
  • Promotes tissue coagulation which results in skin tissue tightening
  • Treats flabby or lax skin in regions of high vascularity
  • The laser’s hemostatic properties lead to minimal bleeding and shorter downtime
  • Bruising is minimal
  • Patients experience less trauma and faster healing time than with traditional liposuction treatment

Does Smartlipo produce lasting results for patients?
Yes! The Smartlipo™ procedure permanently destroys all fat cells in specified treatment areas. When a person gains weight, that person’s fat cells simply expand; adults do not create new fat cells. If patients gain weight, that fat will most likely be deposited in areas where the treatment was not performed.
